December is right around the corner, and it’s only going to get colder! While you’re preparing for this chilly weather by stocking up on cozy sweaters and fuzzy socks, don’t forget to stock up on the essentials for your hair too. The cold can be very damaging to our hair, and our extensions (especially if they are human hair) will react the same way. In cold weather, our hair has a hard time locking-in moisture which causes breakage and that awful frizz we all dread. If your hair is color-treated in any way, these harsh months can take a toll on your vibrant colors by losing all of the gorgeous shine. These cold, wintery months may bring the perfect sweater weather with gorgeous crisp white snow, but it’ll only bring brittle and dryness to your hair. Prepare your hair for the cold by using these tips and tricks:
Deep conditioners will assist your hair in locking in that moisture that gets lost in the cold weather. It’ll also nourish your hair making it stronger and help it withstand these chilly months ahead. While you’re deep conditioning your bio hair, put a conditioning mask on your extensions too! We suggest using the Intensive Recovery Mask by BeautiMark which nourishes, strengthens, and rejuvenates your extensions to keep them strong and shiny.
No matter how much you try to avoid it, your hair WILL get split ends. This is why it is very important to get regular trims to keep your ends looking and feeling healthy. Unfortunately over the winter your hair is even more prone to getting breakage at the ends, so we recommend getting more frequent trims during these months. Our suggested time is getting one every month, but try not to go over 6 weeks between each cut.
Your hair is already going to be attempting to fight the cold weather, so don’t add any more damage by scorching it with hot tools. Make sure to put a heat protectant spray on your hair before you start styling it to refrain from harming your hair any more than it can handle. If you’re going to be styling your extensions along with your hair, make sure to give them a spritz too! Use the Heat Treat Thermal Spray by Jon Renau from our website to prevent any damage from your hot iron tools.
Many times damage to the ends of your hair originates from damage at the scalp! When your scalp is dry and damaged, it keeps your hair from being able to grow stronger, thicker, and longer. When the colder weather comes, it can cause your scalp to be more dry, itchy, and even flaky too. Try a scalp mask or a nourishing oil treatment for your scalp every week to lock in the moisture and keep your it as healthy as possible. Over these chilly months, we also recommend using a dandruff shampoo, even if you typically don't use one, to help prevent that awful dry and flaky scalp I’m sure you all fear.
The cold weather is already going to be harsh on your hair, so don’t add more to it by damaging it yourself! Avoid over-brushing your hair or harshly combing it, and wait until your hair is a at least half dry before brushing through it. We suggest detangling your hair and your extensions with a wide-tooth comb such as the Wide Tooth Comb by Jon Renau.
Keep these tricks in mind when preparing your hair for these cold and unforgiving months ahead so that you can relax and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa by the fire without having to worry about frizzy and damaged hair.
